Kurt Cobain: “Over the Edge pretty much defined my whole personality.” Matt Dillon's '79 debut
Matt Dillon posted this picture of 'OTE' director Jonathan Kaplan on Instagram a couple of days ago, with the following message: "Jonathan Kaplan was the guy who gave me my first job in Over the Edge. Right out of junior high with no experience at all and it forever changed my life . He was a red diaper baby, the son of Black listed parents during McCarthism. Later in LA he became a student of Roger Corman. I never encountered another Director like him. He had a fiery personality and was always laughing. He encouraged me to improvise and say I reminded him of Isaac Hayes! Who he had directed in “Truck Turners”. He called me Marlon when I would go too far and piss him off and he kicked me out of several scenes. But I knew he loved me as he did all of us. I will always be grateful to him. Rest in Peace Jonathan."
Jonathan Kaplan, the brilliant director of 'Over The Edge', passed on August 1st. In addition to 'OTE', he directed Jodie Foster to her first best actress Oscar in 'The Accused'. He received 5 Emmy nominations for his work as helmer & producer on 'ER'. He studied with Scorsese. He directed 'Truck Turner', another one of the best flicks of the 1970s with Isaac Hayes, Nichelle Nichols and Yaphet Kotto. He was a genius. RIP.
