'Who is a Jew?' is a documentary that explores the multifaceted forms of Jewish identity.
Description
From the over mediated presence of Jerry Seinfeld to Woody Allen films and Barbara Streisand archetypes, there is a tendency to internalize Jewish identity to mean very specific Ashkenazi (European) Jewish qualities and ethnic signifiers that are not widely held points of reference worldwide. Through media, academia, and cultural stereotypes, the narrow emphasis on Ashkenazi Jewish culture ignores the reality that Jewish people of color exist all over the world each with their own unique history, and social and cultural practices. This short documentary film explores the perspectives and narratives of Jewish identity by interviewing individuals who identify as multi-ethnic Jews. Through capturing memories, anecdotes, experiences and stories, the film seeks to interrogate the question: Who is a Jew?
