Plot outline

The main protagonists Siva (Jeeva) and Sakthi (Anuya) meet on a train from Coimbatore and strike up a friendship. Siva introduces himself as an army officer and Sakthi as an air hostess. The two part ways on arrival in Chennai, but Siva promises to meet her soon. He pays a visit to the airline company where Sakthi claimed to work, with his mother Kalyani (Urvashi), sister Viji (Sneha Murali) and best friend Vivek (Santhanam) tagging along. When asking for Sakthi, they are instead greeted by another woman with the same name (Shakeela). Siva realizes that he has been tricked.

In reality, Siva is a courier deliveryman and Sakthi, a radio jockey. When they learn of each other’s deception, they swear to get revenge on each other. A series of humorous incidents happen as Siva teases Sakthi live on her radio show and gets her in trouble with her father; and she retaliates by tattling on him to his family and using him as a driver. When Siva fights off a handful of goons to save Sakthi’s brother (Sathyan) and helps organize his marriage, Sakthi develops genuine feelings for him.

She reveals her feelings by planning a surprise birthday party for Siva, but learns that he had lied about his birth date. Humiliated in front of his family, she leaves angry and bitter. Siva learns of her true feelings for him and attempts to reconcile with her, but she ignores him. Siva grows upset as well, fights with his mother and sister, and continuously destroys Vivek’s new mobile phones (they forgive him eventually).

Some time later, Sakthi’s father arranges for her to meet a prospective groom Arun (Arya). Siva coincidentally runs into Arun and is introduced as Sakthi’s “close friend”. He proceeds to tell Arun about all her good qualities, never mentioning anything negative. Sakthi, realizing his true love, leaves Arun and asks Siva to marry her. Initially accepting, he sends her on a wild goose chase, but organizes a surprise birthday party for her at the same time. The two of them make love that night. The following morning he plays another prank on her; she realizes that he will never take any relationship seriously and runs away from him.

Some months later, Siva arrives at Sakthi’s house with his family, to formally ask for her hand in marriage. By chance, Sakthi is revealed to be pregnant (as a result of sleeping with Siva). When both their families learn this, they humorously surround Siva and beat him up. As the credits roll, a scene set two years later reveals that Siva and Sakthi are married and have a son, to whom Siva brags about how he successfully “got the girl”.

SMS tells the story of Siva and Sakthi, a couple who fall in love with each other after a prolonged series of scuffles. Prima facie, there is nothing new in the plot. The story of a couple who initially hates and despises each other and finally falls in love has been told many times, it is the presentation that has to save the day. The movie begins on a train where the couple meets each other for the first time; they lie to each other about their occupations, it is hard to figure out why? But, in the course of time the lies are exposed and both Siva and Sakthi want to settle scores with each other. In the scenes that follow, they go for each others’ necks, giving each other all kinds of troubles, trying to humiliate the other. This goes on for quite a long time and after a point gets tiresome. The portion where the movie falters big time is the point where Siva and Sakthi fall in love. It is hard to see how tender emotions replaced the furious and angry ones that were present not very long ago; the transformation is not smooth. Then, the regular love story begins but their ego keeps surfacing time and again, so does our frustration at the repetitiveness of the whole affair. Finally, they agree to get married, but Siva places one last condition to Sakthi. You might think that it would be a test of love and commitment, but no, it is as ridiculous a condition as it can get. What is more ridiculous is that Sakthi agrees to it. However it turns out that Siva was playing his trump card to get the better of Sakthi. How all their egos are brushed aside and they finally settle down to happy domesticity is the culmination of the story.
