Description
A Countess from Hong Kong was Charlie Chaplin's final film. It was also his first one in colour and widescreen, with big-name stars and studio production rather than being produced by himself.
The film was based on a 1930's script idea, then called "Stowaway", which Chaplin had written for his then-wife and costar Paulette Godard.
The filming took place in January-April 1966 and premiered early next year. The film received very negative criticism. Critics called the film old-fashioned, leaden and unfunny. However, the music, composed by Chaplin, featured the tune "This Is My Song" which became a big worldwide hit, being covered by numerous artists in different languages. Petula Clark recorded it in English, French and German.
The 77-year-old Chaplin reportedly took the criticism very hard and didn't get to make another film, though, until the rest of his life, he was planning one more film, The Freak.
