Description

SYNOPSIS: Virgil First Raise wakes with a shiner and a hangover in a roadside ditch on the hardscrabble plains of Montana. Haunted by the death of his beloved older brother Mose on a cattle drive twenty years earlier, Virgil is a dead man walking...

Solitary, numbed by alcohol, emotionally distant, and frozen against the possibility of love or commitment— he stumbles home to the isolated cattle ranch only to learn that his wife, Agnes, has stolen his rifle and electric razor and left for town. He sets off to find her--

His search for his renegade wife leads him off the Reservation and into a quixotic, modern-day visionquest. Virgil moves ever closer to oblivion— until he discovers a long-hidden revelation, and recovers his true identity.

Redeemed by this knowledge, Virgil becomes freed from the paralyzing shackles of loss, renews the bond of blood between himself and the land-- and makes peace with the winter ghosts that haunt him.

Lily Gladstone. We love you! We are so proud of you! One of the greatest joys in our filmmaking career was casting Lily in Winter in the Blood - The Film. We can't recall the exact day, but we can remember the exact moment when, along with our splendid casting director Rene Haynes running point-- were doing an epic First Nations casting session at the University of Montana. And we asked Lily-- who we had already worked with during a live reading of the work-in-progress script-- to be our 'reader' -- to read (off-camera) with all the various folks auditioning for our dozens of NA roles. And so Lily kept walking actor after actor into the room (often introducing them as "my cousin..." or "my aunty...") and then graciously reading with them-- and as good as so many of the actors were-- we continually found ourselves utterly mesmerized by Lily instead of the on-actor camera. Over and over again. At a certain point, we basically all said, "Who are we kidding?" and offered Lily the (very challenging/brave) role of Marlene. If memory serves, we may have already had an offer out on that role, but rescinded it, as it was blazingly obvious that Lily was a rock star with an epic heart and a very old soul. I/we are so very lucky & proud to have casting Lily in her first feature film role. (And to get to cast her again as a live-saver in Walking Out).We are beyond happy at the monumental success and impact Lily is now achieving. Kudos to you Lily! Break a leg when you make history at the Oscars tomorrow!!
